Read Management-System Signals Before a Performance Verdict
Before escalating an individual performance concern, inspect whether goals, authority, feedback, workload, and review cadence give the role a fair organization.
The problem to solve
A manager may see missed work while the role holder experiences competing instructions, delayed decisions, unclear standards, or a workload that cannot fit the available time. Those conditions do not remove individual responsibility; they do change what leadership must diagnose before prescribing.
Signals to inspect
Use observed evidence, not a general impression.
- Are the two or three most important outcomes explicit?
- Can the role make the decisions needed to deliver them?
- Does workload fit the available capacity after recurring work and interruptions?
- Has specific feedback arrived while the work can still change?
- Is there a dated review point with evidence both parties can inspect?
Practical next actions
Use the Talent Map Review to identify role conditions and the Performance Conversation workflow to prepare a direct, evidence-based agreement where one is needed.

Have the Performance Conversation Before You Escalate the Performance Process
A formal process may be necessary in some situations, but leaders should not use it as a substitute for a clear conversation about the role, evidence, expectations, support, and next review point.
